How to Find a U.S. Distributor

June 9, 2026 · 6 min read

"Find us a U.S. distributor" is the single most common request we get. It's a reasonable goal, but it's worth understanding what the process actually looks like before starting.

Distributors are selective, not passive

A good distributor already carries products that compete for the same shelf space or sales-rep attention as yours. They're not waiting for new suppliers — they're evaluating whether a new product is worth displacing something else in their portfolio. That changes how outreach should work.

What actually moves the process forward

  • Narrowing the list to distributors who already handle your product category and price point, not a broad list of "food distributors"
  • Having your import compliance, documentation and pricing structure ready before the first conversation, not after interest is expressed
  • Being able to speak to logistics — can you actually reliably supply at the volume and consistency a distributor needs
  • A specific, credible reason the distributor should care — a gap in their current line, a price advantage, a differentiated product
  • Persistence. A first "no" or "not right now" is common and not necessarily final

This is largely a research and relationship-building exercise, done in parallel with getting your commercial and compliance basics in order — not a task that happens after everything else is finished.
